    1. Thanks Mary! I love Issuu and it is super easy. All you do is create a free account and upload your document. If you want to maintain your format make sure that you convert your document to a PDF before the upload, I learned that from experience, LOL. That's it, one click and a short time later and you have a cool flipable book.

“Do stories told in art have to be pretty?” I love this question. I think it opens up a door for many students to realize the significance art has in the telling of a story, historical or otherwise. It validates what they see in some artwork, and even more importantly, things they might want to express.
Your selection of images is fantastic (in my humble opinion) They cover a lot of territory, tell stories which have connection to each other while also having different perspectives. I also love the range of work, paintings, photographs and bas relief. You’re also very in tune with your population of your classroom and you’ve done an excellent job attending to that with the selection of images content wise.
Ummm, did they get to eat the portraits after they made them??? LOLO cant help but ask, they were amazing and YUMMY looking . Way to engage them!
The tiles are precious. What amazing honest little narratives they created. Its amazing what fourth graders can do when given permission.... Well done!
If I had a kiln, I would definitely consider a version of this unit at my school... Wouldn’t it fun fun to so a big one!!! Or have them do a series.....
I wonder with the kids who don’t have the drawing skills... Maybe have them focus on a feeling... And do like an analog drawing and then make a more abstract composition in the tile...? Hmmm... Just a thought. It is always a challenge with a big class and I admire all you have done! Thanks so much for sharing!

  3. Daum Alternative Assignment:

Your big idea and the images that you used to VTS were great. I especially liked the Benton piece and the Capa photograph. The big idea of using art to record and tell stories worked great for your students. They already get the concept of written records and stories as well as verbal stories and records so introducing them to visual stories and records is so great. The process of creating their own visual narrative in tile must have been a daunting one for them but they rocked it. Kudos to you. I’m sure that experience of VTS within this unit gave the students level of confidence that they would not have had with this assignment otherwise. As I mentioned before I really liked the images that you chose to VTS. I could definitely use some of those in my classroom and I loved the cookie cameos. My students would really enjoy that too. Did the students do any writing throughout the unit? If not that process even if it is a reflective writing of their progress and process might help them to have a stronger product. I was really so impressed with everything here and I too am going to look into issuu.

  4. Hot Pockets,

I enjoyed your Big Idea, as it is kind've similar to mine, in that Story telling through art is hitorical. I chose US History seen through a VTS lens. Stories are told by the artists of history. Also, your concept is much more broad, in that images do tell stories rather thay are recording history, or a simple moment in time.

The cookie cameos were my fave. I think (in agreeance with Lindsay, my students would enjoy that as well. Especially if we played Alabama songs in the background. :0)
